Harry was a naval doctor with the rank of Surgeon-Lieutenant in UNIT when the Doctor and Sarah took him on a trip in the TARDIS. Although he was a perfectly capable companion, he found the whole thing a bit much, and when they went back to Earth, he stayed there. It obviously had an effect on him, though, because he became one of the many Deputy Directors in MI5. Later, he joins NATO, where he reaches the rank of Commodore and is involved in top secret medical research.
He may look younger in his icons but in the present he's about 60.
The times in Harry's posts in order:
childhood the 50s and 60s when Harry is, funnily enough, not yet an adult
pre-unit the late 60s and 70s when Harry's in the Navy and before he joined UNIT
unit when Harry's in UNIT and includes the time he spends with the Doctor
post-unit the 80s after Hary leaves UNIT but before he joins MI5
mi5 the 90s when Harry's in MI5
nato the early 2000s when Harry's working for NATO and before he disappears
present after Harry gets back.
